Alright, Eric is on a mission to recover; he did awesome today. He did 12 minutes in the standing frame and his blood pressure maintained on the safe level. I thought for sure we would be done for the day after 12 minutes of standing up but I surely was mistaken. His physical therapy team decided to try something new; they are on a mission too as a matter of fact. They wanted to see if Eric could stand up on his own, while holding on to sidebars. With some help Eric got out of the wheelchair and up on his feet. He can’t keep his balance yet and he’s still struggling with holding his head up, so they were holding on to him just in case. Eric stood up!!! And after a break in the wheelchair he did it again…and again…and again….and finally one more time. He stood up approx 1 minute each time. Talk about being stubborn and determined. Ok, he had to be exhausted after that workout, right? Oh no, not today and not Eric. His OT (Gina) moved over to his arms and got him working out his arms too. What amazes me the most is that he did most of the things she asked him to, not all the time but most of it. He listed, he understood, and he followed her commands. As if that wasn’t enough, his balloon in the trach has been deflated completely for over 24 hours now and he’s swallowing on his own.
It was a very good day today, but then again, number 6 is Eric’s lucky number. It’s been 60 days today since the accident; I’m wondering what Eric will surprise us with on day 66.
